Issue

Outlook “external program” message when e-mail is generated by APP

Symptom

Outlook message box displayed for each e-mail when output is to SEND rather thant DRAFT

Cause

Outlook Trust Center setting for Programmatic Access

Resolution Notes

APP delivery definition is set to use Outlook and SEND immediately. An Outlook dialog box is presented for each e-mail that is generated such that the user must allow the process to continue.

The issue is caused by a setting in the Programmatic Access section of the Outlook Trust Center. The default option when an external program tries to send (not save as draft) and e-mail through Outlook is to “Warn about suspicious activity …”

The only work-around that is known to address the issue is to change this setting to “Never warn about suspicious activity.” The downside to this approach is that while it solves the APP issue it can expose the system to other applications that try to use Outlook as an e-mail conduit.

There are some third-party tools on the market to address this issue but no specific ones are recommended.
